Negotiation

Negotiation is one of those skills which we use daily and is therefore beneficial to have it developed at a high level for anyone. We use it in our personal lives when we discuss things with our friends, family members or when we ask a clerk  for a favor. But we also use it in our professional lives when negotiating conditions with our suppliers, prices with our clients, or maybe a possibility of a raise with our superior.

When people hear “negotiation” they usually think of a scenario where one side “wins” – it takes all, and the other side “loses” – gets nothing. This approach is called “win-lose” and, of course, negotiation can have such a form. But isn’t there another way? A better way?

There is and it’s called “win-win”. It is a way of negotiating so that both sides win. The negotiators treat themselves as partners rather than adversaries and they try to find such an agreement which is beneficial for both sides. You may think that such a situation is impossible, but it is indeed possible. The only difference is that achieving such situation requires a lot more effort than the classic “win-lose” approach.
